Printable Christmas Countdown Calendar 2026: A Daily December Checklist
Free printable Christmas countdown calendar for December 2026, in colour or ink-saver, A4 or US Letter. Each date shows the days left until Christmas Day.

This printable Christmas countdown calendar covers December 1 to 25, 2026, and every date shows how many days are left until Christmas Day. Download it in colour or ink-saver, on A4 or US Letter paper, then open the Christmas countdown whenever you want the live hours and minutes to go with it.
December 2026 starts on a Tuesday and Christmas Day falls on a Friday. The calendar was built from those dates, so every box sits under the right weekday.

Each file is a single page. The US Letter version starts its weeks on Sunday, as most US wall calendars do. The A4 version starts on Monday, the layout many A4-paper countries use. Only the column order changes; every date and number is the same.
What is on the page
Every date from December 1 to 24 has four things in its box:
- The date in the top-left corner.
- A tick box in the top-right, to mark the day done.
- The days to go, the big number, which is the count to Christmas Day at the start of that date.
- A short line at the bottom, for one word or one sticker: what you did, made or ate that day.
December 25 is a single highlighted box marked Christmas Day. The dates after it, December 26 to 31, are printed in grey so the month still looks complete without competing for attention.
How the numbers work
The number in each box is a calendar count: the dates between that day and December 25. It does not change during the day. That is the same number the countdown page shows as its calendar count.
| Date | Weekday | Number in the box | Live timer at 6:00 PM that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 1 | Tuesday | 24 | 23 days 6 hours |
| December 6 | Sunday | 19 | 18 days 6 hours |
| December 13 | Sunday | 12 | 11 days 6 hours |
| December 18 | Friday | 7 | 6 days 6 hours |
| December 20 | Sunday | 5 | 4 days 6 hours |
| December 24 | Thursday | 1 | 0 days 6 hours |
| December 25 | Friday | Christmas Day | The countdown has finished |
The live timer column shows why a ticking countdown always looks one day lower in the evening: by 6 PM, a quarter of the day is gone. If that looks wrong, the guide on why a countdown shows one day less walks through it.
Remaining days, not completed days
There are two ways to number a countdown calendar. Some count up ("day 1, day 2"), others count down ("24 days to go"). This one counts down, and the numbers belong to the dates, not to your progress.
That has a practical upside: if you start on December 9, or miss a few days, the box for each date still shows the right number. Nobody has to catch up by ticking three boxes at once.
Printing tips
Most printers handle this in one pass. A few settings make it come out cleanly:
- Pick the file that matches your paper. Printing the Letter file on A4, or the other way round, can trim the edges.
- Choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. "Fit to page" also works, with slightly smaller boxes.
- Use the ink-saver version for a black-and-white printer or for colouring in. It has outlines only.
- Thicker paper or card stock lasts the month on a fridge. A clear plastic sleeve works too, and a dry-wipe marker can tick the boxes.
- Print one per child if you have more than one counting down. Arguments about whose turn it is to tick the box are surprisingly real.
Ways to use it
The calendar is deliberately simple, so it fits whatever you already do in December. Hang it where the family passes every evening, like the fridge or the back of a door, and make ticking the box part of bedtime.
In a classroom, one large print by the board works as a shared countdown, and children can take turns writing the line for each date. Keep in mind that school holidays usually start before December 25, so the last few boxes may fall after term ends.
If you want something to do on each date, not just a box to tick, the companion guide has 24 Christmas countdown activities for kids, one for each date from December 1 to 24, with a matching checklist to print.
Starting before December 1
It is October 28, 2026 as this is written, so there is time to print before December starts. If you want a longer run-up, the live Christmas countdown covers any date in the year, and the paper calendar can take over on December 1.
Countdown calendar or Advent calendar?
The two names often get used for the same thing, but they are not always the same dates. In the church calendar, Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which in 2026 is Sunday, November 29. Many shop-bought Advent calendars ignore that and start on December 1 anyway.
This printable is a countdown calendar: December 1 to Christmas Day, with the days left in each box. If your family follows Advent from November 29, the extra two days can go on the back of the sheet.
Starting after December 1
Because every box shows its own date's count, starting late only means fewer boxes to tick.
| Start date | Weekday | Boxes to tick before Christmas Day | First number you see |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 1 | Tuesday | 24 | 24 |
| December 7 | Monday | 18 | 18 |
| December 14 | Monday | 11 | 11 |
| December 21 | Monday | 4 | 4 |
The boxes to tick and the first number are always the same, which makes a nice check for children learning to count: the number on the box is how many boxes are left, Christmas Day not included.
Making it easier to read
The big numbers are printed in bold so they are readable from across a room. The ink-saver version uses black outlines only, which also gives the highest contrast for anyone who finds coloured backgrounds hard to read. For very young children, read the number aloud each evening and count down on fingers for the last ten days.
More than one child, or more than one home
If two children share one calendar, give each a colour for the line in the box, or alternate who ticks. If they live in two homes in December, print one calendar per home. The numbers are tied to dates, so both copies always agree, whichever home a child is in that night.
Families split across time zones can use the same paper calendar too. The dates are the same everywhere; only the live timer changes with the time zone. A grandparent abroad can tick the same box on the same date and talk about it on a call.
Pairing it with the screen countdown
The paper calendar answers "how many days", and the screen answers "how long exactly". A nice routine is to tick the box at bedtime, then look at the Christmas countdown together on the last few evenings, when the hours start to matter.
Common mistakes
Ticking a box in the morning and expecting the number to change. The number is fixed for the whole date. It changes at midnight, when you move to the next box.
Comparing the box with the live timer at night. In the evening the timer will show one day fewer plus some hours. Both are correct.
Printing the wrong paper size. If the grid looks cut off, check that the file matches your paper and the print scale is 100%.
Counting Christmas Day itself as a day to wait. The countdown reaches zero when Christmas Day starts. December 24 is the last date with a number in it.
Check one box against the live countdown
About 2 minutesGoal: Read the number on today's box and confirm it matches the calendar count on the Christmas countdown.
- Find today's date on the calendar. If it is before December, pick December 1 for practice.
- Read the big number in that box. On December 1 it is 24.
- Open the countdown and look at its calendar-day count. Open the Christmas countdown
- Compare the two. They should match. Then glance at the live timer and note it is one day lower, plus hours.
- Tick the box and write one word on the line. Tomorrow, move one box along.
Check the result: On any date from December 1 to 24, 2026, the box number and the countdown's calendar count should be the same. The live timer will show one fewer day plus the hours left today.
Frequently asked questions
What day of the week is Christmas 2026?
Christmas Day 2026 is on Friday, December 25. December 1, 2026 is a Tuesday, so the countdown calendar starts in the Tuesday column.
What do the numbers on the countdown calendar mean?
Each big number is the calendar days left until Christmas Day at the start of that date. December 1 shows 24, December 24 shows 1, and December 25 is marked as Christmas Day.
Can I start the calendar after December 1?
Yes. The numbers are tied to dates, not to how many boxes you have ticked, so you can start on any date and the count stays right.
Which version should I print?
Print the A4 version for A4 paper and the US Letter version for Letter paper. The ink-saver version keeps the same layout with no filled colour areas.
Is the calendar free to use in a classroom?
Yes. The calendar is free to print for home and classroom use. Please share the link to this page rather than re-uploading the file.
Your next box
Print the version that suits your printer, put it where everyone walks past, and let tomorrow's box do the talking. When you want the exact hours, open the Christmas countdown, and for New Year's Eve plans once the boxes run out, see New Year's Eve countdown activities for kids.
Twenty-four boxes, one tick a night, and the last one is the easiest to remember.
