How Days Until a Date Are Calculated
The days until a date are calculated by subtracting today's date from the target date. Today is not counted and the target date is, so the result is the number of midnights left before the event. Omni Calculator, The Calculator Site and Google give the same count for the same two dates.
Note the date today, count the days left in this month, add every full month, then add the days of the target month: 2 in Oct + 30 in Nov + 25 in Dec.

Put the target date in cell A2 and subtract today: =A2-TODAY() returns the days remaining. DATEDIF gives the same number, and NETWORKDAYS counts the business days left, both ends included.

The result is 0 days, since no midnights are left before the date. On the holiday countdown pages, the counter changes to a message that the day has arrived and starts counting to next year's date from tomorrow.
What happens if I select a date that has already passed?
The calculator shows how many days ago the date was and offers a one-click switch to the Days Since Calculator. The holiday quick picks always jump to the next occurrence, so Christmas after December 25 counts to next year's Christmas.
Does the countdown update automatically?
Yes. The day count reads today's date from your device and moves at your local midnight, and the live seconds counter ticks every second. The page checks the date again every 30 seconds while it stays open.
Can I count down to a date next year or further ahead?
Yes, the To field takes any date up to December 31, 9999. Spans longer than a year show years, months and days as well: today to January 1, 2030 is 1,160 days, or 3 years, 2 months and 3 days.
Can I see the time remaining in weeks and months?
Yes. Every result shows weeks and months next to the day count, such as 8 weeks and 1 day until Christmas. Open More options and set Show result in to Weeks, Months, Hours, Minutes or Seconds to make that the main number.

How do I calculate the days until my final exams?
Enter the exam date in the To field and leave From on today. To count by hand, note today's date, note the exam date and count the days between them on a calendar. From September 1, 2023 to final exams on May 1, 2024 is 243 days, and from today to May 1, 2027 is 184 days.
