This Thanksgiving planning checklist starts on Thursday, November 12, 2026 and ends on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, with one task for each date. It covers guests, travel, shopping, setup and who does what, and skips the recipes. Print it, then open the Thanksgiving countdown to see how many days you have left.

Every date below was counted back from November 26. If you are reading this later in the two weeks, start at today's row and keep going.

The Thanksgiving planning checklist, day by day

US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 that is November 26, and the day after, Friday, November 27, is Black Friday.

The printable has the same fifteen rows plus a "Who" column for names.

Before the two weeks: invitations

Invitations sit outside the fourteen days on purpose. Three weeks before Thanksgiving is a common point to send them, so guests can book travel and time off. Counting 21 days back from November 26, 2026 lands on Thursday, November 5.

If people travel by air or need time off work, earlier still is kinder. Just name the date in the message, so nobody has to work out which Thursday you mean.

Who does what

Most hosting stress comes from one person doing every job. Hand jobs out on November 18 and write the names on the printable.

JobWhen it happensGood fit for
Setup and seatingNovember 21 and 24Anyone who arrives early or lives nearby
Drinks and iceThanksgiving DayA guest who asks "what can I bring?"
Kids' table and activitiesThanksgiving DayTeenagers or a patient uncle
Carving and servingThanksgiving DayThe person who will not panic
TimekeeperThanksgiving DaySomeone not cooking the main dish
Cleanup and dishesAfter the mealEveryone, in shifts

A timekeeper sounds fussy until the side dishes are ready an hour before the main one. One person with a phone timer and the plan in hand keeps the kitchen calm.

Travel and the busy days

Lots of people travel on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so roads and airports can be slow. That is why the plan keeps Wednesday, November 25 light: pickups and short errands, nothing that has to happen at a precise time.

If guests are flying, collect their flight numbers on November 15 and decide who meets each arrival. For guests driving, share parking notes in the November 22 reminder.

Shopping without the last-minute rush

Splitting the list on November 17 saves a lot of trouble later. Shelf-stable items such as drinks, canned goods, paper plates, foil and containers can be bought a week out, on November 19. Fresh items wait until Monday, November 23.

If you are ordering a main dish or baked goods from a store, write the pickup date and time in your calendar when you order on November 16. If you are buying a frozen turkey, check the thawing time printed on the package or in the USDA's guidance before you choose a shopping day.

Scaling the plan to your gathering

The fifteen rows work for any size of meal, but the effort behind each one changes. These are planning suggestions, not rules.

GatheringSeats and tablesJobs to hand outShopping
6 people or fewerYour own table is usually enoughDrinks and cleanupOne shelf-stable trip, one fresh trip
7 to 15 peopleBorrow a folding table and chairsDrinks, kids' table, carving, cleanupSplit the list between two people
16 or morePlan two tables or a buffet lineEvery job on the list, plus a greeterConsider asking guests to bring sides

A potluck changes the menu row more than anything else. On November 13, write who is bringing which dish and share the list, so you do not end up with five pies and no vegetables.

Thanksgiving Day, hour by hour

Without getting into recipes, a time plan for the day itself keeps the hosting part calm. Work back from the time you want to sit down, and give each block one owner.

  1. Morning: set up the drinks station and the coat spot. Put the printable where everyone can see it.
  2. Two hours before guests: a final tidy of the main rooms and the bathroom. The timekeeper reads through the plan once.
  3. One hour before: serving dishes and labels out, music on, phones charged.
  4. Guests arrive: the greeter takes coats and points people to drinks. The host stays in the kitchen.
  5. After the meal: the cleanup crew takes the first shift. Leftover containers come out of the cupboard.

Guests in other time zones

If some family will join by video call, check their local time before you pick the meal time. A 3:00 PM Eastern dinner is 2:00 PM Central, 1:00 PM Mountain and 12:00 PM Pacific, and later still for Alaska and Hawaii.

Put the call time in their time zone in the November 22 reminder. "We'll call at 12:00 PM your time" is much harder to get wrong than "3 PM".

If you are starting late

Starting with five days to go is fine. Merge the earlier rows into one evening: guest list, menu and job list together, then shop once for shelf-stable and fresh items on the Monday. The rows from November 22 onward stay as they are.

Common mistakes

Counting from the wrong Thursday. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday, not always the last. In 2026 they are the same day, November 26, but in a year with five Thursdays in November they differ.

Leaving all the shopping for Wednesday. Shelf-stable items can go a week early, and fresh items on Monday. Wednesday is for pickups only.

Assuming everyone knows the plan. The reminder on November 22 is the cheapest fix there is. Time, address, parking and who brings what, in one message.

Mixing up US and Canadian Thanksgiving. Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October. This checklist uses the US date.

Worked example

Check one lead time

About 3 minutes

Goal: Pick one task with a lead time, confirm its exact date with a date tool, and check how many days are left until Thanksgiving.

  1. Choose a task that needs lead time. For this example, sending invitations three weeks before.
  2. Count back 21 days from Thanksgiving in Days From Today, set to ago. Calculate your target date
  3. The result should be Thursday, November 5, 2026. Write it in your calendar.
  4. Open the Thanksgiving countdown and compare its calendar count with the "Days left" column for today's row.
  5. Tick off today's task on the printable and put a name next to tomorrow's.

Check the result: Counting 21 days back from November 26, 2026 should give Thursday, November 5, 2026, the same weekday as Thanksgiving. The countdown's calendar count on November 12 should be 14.

Frequently asked questions

When is Thanksgiving 2026?

US Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. It is always the fourth Thursday of November, so it falls between November 22 and November 28.

When should I start planning Thanksgiving?

Two weeks out is enough for most hosts. In 2026 that is Thursday, November 12. Invitations go out earlier, about three weeks ahead, which is Thursday, November 5, 2026.

What should I do the day before Thanksgiving?

Keep Wednesday, November 25 light. Pick up any orders, charge devices, set out serving dishes and plan a simple dinner, since many guests travel that day.

Is this checklist for Canadian Thanksgiving too?

The dates are for US Thanksgiving. Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October, which was October 12 in 2026, but the same two-week structure works if you shift the dates.

Today's row

Find today's date in the table, do that one task, and let the rest wait for their own dates. Open the Thanksgiving countdown when you want the exact days and hours. If a shipping or order deadline is written in business days, calendar days vs business days shows how Thanksgiving week changes the count.

Fifteen rows, one a day, and only the last one involves sitting down to eat.
